Scotland - South Africa Renewable Energy Meeting

The SABA Scotland – South Africa Renewable Energy meeting saw our largest gathering of SABA members to date for a fantastic morning of presentations, Q&A and networking.

The meeting opened with a statement from the South African delegation that “Scotland is known worldwide for it’s innovation in green energy which makes it a perfect partner for South Africa, we hope that this is the first stage in a long partnership.”

The presentations from Pumela Salela, UK Country Head of @Brand South Africa and Bhavtik C. VALLABHJEE (ACMA, CGMA), Head of Power and Renewables at Absa Corporate and Investment Banking gave SABA members, and guests from the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, a chance to find out more about the renewables landscape in South Africa and the opportunities for Scottish companies across the sector including engineering, project management, supply chain and skills training. Given the Q&A lasted more than an hour the interest in South Africa was demonstrable.

As part of the Independent Power Producer Programme a total of 6422MW has been procured with 3876 MW operational, and 6848 MW remaining to be allocated, including a pipeline of more than 80 private sector projects under development in this stage, creating an enormous market for partnerships. A raft of changes in regulation from President Ramaphosa is also encouraging overseas entry into the market.

Members also learnt about the green hydrogen strategy in Northern cape and the massive opportunities for green energy skills training partnerships across the country.

With networking lasting over two hours between members and the South African delegation the feedback we have had has been excellent and we look forward to developing a strategy with South Africa to capitalise on this first engagement.

All presentation are available to SABA members.

Big thanks as always to Seona Shand and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce for their partnership.
