From 23rd May to 6th June 2019 our Chairman, John Paterson, conducted a high-level business and fact-finding mission to Kenya, kindly organised with help from HE Manoa Esipisu, High Commissioner of Kenya to the UK and the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Following on from the visit of HE High Commissioner to Scotland in May, SABA travelled to Nairobi to better understand the scale and scope of President Kenyatta’s Big 4 Trade Agenda and to identify opportunities for Scottish companies and institutions. In order to help facilitate these opportunities, SABA also met and evaluated potential local partners and consultants in its network and explored the funding landscape, both private and public sector.

Meetings with the Government of Kenya included the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade, Industrialization, Petroleum, Maritime, Health, Education and KenInvest. From the private sector meetings were held with, amongst others, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), British Chamber of Commerce (BCCK) and the Kenyan Association of Manufacturers (KAM).

As a result of the visit SABA has identified up to 20 specific opportunities for Scottish business and institutions in agriculture, aquaculture, healthcare, manufacturing, maritime, housing, infrastructure and education – both in work, higher and TVET – across sectors, which we will be discussing over the coming days with our members and partners.

SABA has been requested to sign a cooperation agreement with KenInvest and MoU’s with KEPSA and BCCK. It has also confirmed a local partnership and consultancy network to support members entering Kenya for the first time. These outcomes support SABA’s objective of making it easier for Scottish companies and institutions to do business in Africa.

A fuller report will be available shortly for members in the members’ area and we will be planning to follow up meetings and further engagement with the Government of Kenya as we progress.
