The Scottish Africa Business Association (SABA) has announced the launch of its upcoming Zanzibar Trade Mission, taking place in February 2027 (dates to be confirmed), offering Scottish organisations the opportunity to explore new partnerships and commercial opportunities in one of East Africa’s most strategically important island economies.
The mission will bring together Scottish businesses, academic institutions and sector specialists for a focused programme of market briefings, stakeholder meetings, networking opportunities and site visits, connecting delegates with key decision-makers and organisations across Zanzibar’s priority growth sectors.
Located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, Zanzibar is undergoing significant economic transformation, with a strong focus on sustainable development, investment and international partnerships. The islands’ strategic location, rich marine resources and growing investment agenda create opportunities for Scottish expertise, particularly in areas where Scotland has recognised global strengths.
The trade mission will focus on four key sectors:
Blue economy – supporting sustainable marine development, fisheries, aquaculture, marine conservation, coastal resilience and the responsible use of ocean resources
Energy and renewable energy – exploring opportunities linked to clean energy generation, energy access, sustainability and the transition towards a lower-carbon economy
Education and skills training – connecting Scottish expertise in universities, colleges, vocational education and workforce development with Zanzibar’s growing demand for skills development
Agriculture and aquaculture – highlighting opportunities in sustainable agriculture, food production, fisheries, technology and innovation
With a young and growing population, increasing tourism demand and a commitment to sustainable economic growth, Zanzibar is looking to international partners to support the development of resilient industries and create new opportunities for collaboration.
Delegates will benefit from direct engagement with government representatives, business leaders, educational institutions and local partners, gaining insight into the market, understanding the opportunities available and building relationships that can support future collaboration.
Frazer Lang, Chief Executive of the Scottish Africa Business Association, said: "Zanzibar offers exciting opportunities for Scottish organisations looking to share expertise, build partnerships and access new markets. The islands have significant potential across the blue economy, renewable energy, agriculture, aquaculture and skills development – sectors where Scotland has world-class knowledge and experience. "This mission will give delegates the opportunity to better understand the market, connect directly with key stakeholders and explore how Scottish innovation and expertise can contribute to Zanzibar’s sustainable economic development. Our aim is always to create meaningful connections that lead to long-term partnerships and mutually beneficial opportunities."
SABA has extensive experience delivering trade missions and international programmes that connect Scottish organisations with partners across Africa. Through its network of businesses, governments, universities and sector experts, SABA supports organisations to identify opportunities, navigate new markets and build successful international relationships.
The Zanzibar Trade Mission will take place in February 2027, with final dates to be confirmed. Places will be limited to ensure delegates receive a focused and high-quality programme.
