Africa's offshore energy sector is entering a period of renewed growth, with increasing investment in deepwater exploration and development creating new opportunities across the region. In a recent interview with The Energy Year, Fugro's Head of Business Development for Africa, Quinton Gero, shared his perspective on the trends, challenges and technologies shaping the future of offshore projects in Africa.
Quinton highlighted growing demand for high-quality Geo-data to support safer and more informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle. As offshore developments move into deeper and more complex environments, access to reliable geophysical, geotechnical, environmental and metocean data is helping operators reduce uncertainty, manage risk and improve project outcomes.
The interview also explored the increasing role of autonomous and remote technologies in offshore operations. From autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to AI-enabled solutions, these technologies are helping project teams improve efficiency, reduce offshore risk and gather critical data in areas where infrastructure and logistics can present challenges.
Fugro Venturer supporting offshore projects across Africa
To support offshore projects across the region, Fugro has deployed its specialist survey vessel Fugro Venturer, which is delivering geophysical surveys using advanced AUV technology alongside geotechnical and environmental investigation programmes.
Backed by Fugro's strong local presence and decades of experience in African waters, the vessel supports clients by simplifying mobilisation, helping keep projects on schedule and enabling safe operations in complex offshore environments.
For organisations planning offshore surveys, development programmes or environmental studies, Fugro's integrated Geo-data capabilities help provide the insights needed to progress projects with confidence.
