SABA’s History

SABA was created in 2019 as a product of the work undertaken by the Scotland Africa Business Exchange, founded in 2015.

During this period SABE organised and hosted several inward trade missions from African Ambassadors and their trade teams including Ghana, Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda and South Africa. As well as this SABE initiated, organised and hosted consecutive Scotland Africa Oil & Gas conferences which included energy ministers (African and Scottish), heads of national oil companies and other energy-related government officials from the continent.

SABE has also participated and presented at numerous trade focussed events including Chairing the Africa session at the Scottish Government and CBI Scotland’s “Export Challenge” launch event and presenting on partnerships for development at the “Celebrating Mandela’s Centenary” in Glasgow.

In 2018 the Scotland Africa Business Exchange hosted the African Union Heads of Mission Meeting in Edinburgh over three days. Eighteen African Heads of Mission and their trade teams visited Scotland, in the largest event of its kind, to engage with the Scottish government, business and institutions, across multiple sectors, to learn more about Scotland’s expertise and the trade and exporting potential. As a result, eleven attendee countries requested SABE to be their trade development partner in Scotland with a further six requesting help with specific projects.

Recognising that promoting the vast opportunities available to Scotland across Africa would need a more targeted and partnership led approach, SABA was founded to explore, collate and disseminate this information in a way that created a more efficient and business-friendly environment for its members and partners.
